Multilevel RAID Disk Arrays

چکیده

Bricks or Storage Nodes SNs holding a dozen or more disks are cost-effective building blocks for ultrareliable storage. We describe the Multilevel RAID MRAID paradigm for protecting both SNs and their disks. Each SN is a k-disk-failure-tolerant kDFT array, while replication or -node failure tolerance NFTs paradigm is applied at the SN level. We provide the data layout for RAID5/5 and RAID6/5 MRAIDs and give examples of updating data and recovering lost data. The former requires storage transactions to ensure the atomicity of storage updates. In Conclusions we outline areas for further research.

Multi-Terabyte EIDE Disk Arrays running Linux RAID5

High-energy physics experiments are currently recording large amounts of data and in a few years will be recording prodigious quantities of data. New methods must be developed to handle this data and make analysis at universities possible. Grid Computing is one method; however, the data must be cached at the various Grid nodes. We examine some storage techniques that exploit recent developments...

EIDE Disk Arrays and Its Implement

Along with the information high-speed development, RAID, which has large capacity, high availability, and high performance, has played an important role in storage system. Comparison with SCSI disk drive, the body of EIDE disk drive is similar to SCSI’s, but for long time, EIDE disk drive performance is lower than SCSI disk drive’s. Recently,an EIDE drive is rapidly developed. New EIDE drive al...

Rotary-code: Efficient MDS Array Codes for RAID-6 Disk Arrays

Low encoding/decoding complexity is essential for practical RAID-6 storage systems. In this paper, we describe a new coding scheme, which we call Rotary-code, for RAID-6 disk arrays. We construct Rotarycode based on a bit matrix-vector product similar to the Reed-Solomon coding, and provide the geometry encoding method and detailed non-recursive decoding algorithms. The capability of two-disk f...

Performance Study of RAID-5 Disk Arrays with Data and Parity Cache

Disk array architectures such as RAID-5 have become an acceptable way for designing highly reliable and high-performance storage systems. However, one major drawback of a RAID-5 disk array system is that an update to a data block may involve four disk accesses. Such a high overhead is especially undesirable for workloads with high update rate as in transaction processing. In this paper, we pres...
